I’m Chief Disruption Officer, Professor of Accountancy, and Arthur Andersen Fellow at the Gies College of Business, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The path here ran from astrophysics to data science to business. Trained as an astrophysicist (Ph.D., Johns Hopkins; postdoctoral work at Caltech), I spent twenty years developing machine learning methods for massive astronomical datasets, co-founded the Dark Energy Survey, and received the 2021 ACM SIGMOD Systems Award for contributions to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. I then led the Illinois Data Science Initiative before moving to Gies, where I now work on AI and emerging technology in business: as a researcher, in the classroom, and as a member of the CNBC Disruptor 50 Academic Advisory Board.
